Mixed impressions so far...well here is the new full demonstration:

2142

What do you think?

Gunball - May 27, 2006 11:05 AM (GMT)
i like it but anything with big robots gets my vote

B)

like the way you cn change around equip as well

dazcarroll - May 28, 2006 12:23 AM (GMT)
looks good. the idea of snipers in stealth is awesome and the general concept looks great. im definately going to try it out.

fr0styakaimpact - May 28, 2006 09:01 AM (GMT)
damn lol i will be running round in that invisible mode kniving people!

Ivo.eng - June 11, 2006 10:33 PM (GMT)
All I will say is unimpressed. It looks like a whole lot of rubbish to me. For a start robots that walk and look slightly like humans which have clearly been moddeled on them. Why would you model a robot on a human when apart from our intelligence we are a weak pathetic species. If you were to model your fighting vehicle on an animal why not make it the size and strength of a rhino or elephant or like a cheater so uber fast.

The whole idea "plasma" pinging at each other is all very far fetched and a little bit outside of my small and rather scientific imagination and the tanks and apc's still seem in evidence. All looks rather two much like starwars and rather unlike what is likely to happen in the future.

The invisibility mode is another joke. Wow now people don't have to haxx the game give them an unfair advantage all of their own. What a ridiculous idea. O and finally lets get to the massive flying tower blocks (space blocks as I prefer to call them) that suddenly grace our skys before I get onto techincalities like metal shortages yadda yadda yadda and the amount if lift to power one we will just take two seconds to laugh at the fact 2 pieces of 2142 (super) C4 takes one down.

Wow it really doesn't get any more bullshitty than the new BF 2142 does it!

Gunball - June 11, 2006 11:21 PM (GMT)
cloaking doesnt make you invisible just harder to see
im going on this from playing planetside where at the start i was forever getting ganked by cloakers but now i know what to look out for and can usually see them a mile off
and chances are theyll only have short range and weak weapons

and yeah i agree with you on the mech designs would have preferred something like the mechs from ghost in the shell
sort of like insects but not quite

Recon - June 13, 2006 04:53 PM (GMT)
I don't think there is anything wrong with the mech designs. Shaping it like a rhino won't make it any stronger and shaping it like a cheater won't make it any faster.

Check out the mechs in MGS4 (the 15 min trailer here) -- they look very similar to the ones from this new BF and they are capable of a lot lol. I think these two-legged mechs are about as good as you could get.

But I still don't like 'futuristic' games like this and I doubt I'll buy it. MGS4 does look good but I haven't played any of them since the original MGS.

Gunball - June 13, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
is that the original nes version or you mean playstation?

Nah, just the PS1 version. I didn't know it went further back lol.

Obviously. I'm not stupid. The point i was making was if you were picking an organism whos charecteristics you wanted to use to make a robot you would not pick a humans shape. They would have been cooler like the striders on HL2 imo. My point therefore was about the realism of it as a possible future for this planet. As to your point about MGS well they can make it how they like it doesn't mean its how it would be in real life and because of that I don't like it.

Also imo MGS was dull - I enjoy killing toooo much.

Gunball - June 14, 2006 12:04 PM (GMT)
the reason that human mechs are so common is that there more versatile for doing many differetn tasks instead of building many differetn kinds of robots to do only one maybe two
so i think it is pretty realistic that they have used those designs
my problem was that they werent more imaginitive
would have liked something that would have struck fear into your heart at first sight

Those MGS4 ones would strike fear into me! It's a shame they haven't made the BF mechs more like those, the BF ones look a bit heavy and clumsy.

So you think rhino-shaped mechs are more likely to be made?

Humans arn't particularily good at anything on their own. Which is my point.

The point if your read it correctly was why would you chose the human form to mimic. A rhino has a very thick skin thats very strong, can sprint quite fast over short distances and has a big sharp horn. Do these not sound like better charecteristics to emulate in a mech compared to those of humans?

However I am not suggesting that an animal form should be used merely that why would a human one be used over all the animals. I believe robots of the future will mimic no animal but be more of a combination of perfect charecteristics of many organisms.

EDIT: Or be something entirely new

I don't think they're gonna look at the skin or horn to make any mech. It has its own weapons and its own armour. And it's a mech -- it can 'sprint' until it runs out of fuel lol.

The only characteristic that matters is how it moves and if you look at the MGS4 video it could move very well in the future.

I almost think your intentionally missing the point. I am not proposing we rebuild the white rhino. I am just saying that we would not make them look like humans.

Its a video game greg its not real

Why would they make it two legged for a start - very unstable

Why legs at all the joints require over complex mehcanics and the massive profile of an upright object makes it a huge target.

Why do people assume things must get larger to improve when we are in a world of ever increasing micro technology. For the future I predict mechs will never exsist and Tanks will become lower profile remote control vehicles perhaps with similar movement to hovercrafts and they will be very fast.

lol, well I think everything that the MGS4 mech does will be possible in the next few hundred years.

Legs are good. You can't climb mountains or jump over buildings with a hovercraft. And by the time they are making these things, the mechanics of a knee won't be very complex.

Three legs could be better -- any more and it might get a bit complex. Two legs is handy for climbing and turning and stuff though.

Does look good:

Right well there are problems with the bipedal tank thing...
When it lifts one leg all the weight will be on a small surface area...sink!
it wont really climb steep angles either, all the rocks will crumble.

I think a smaller design like the MGS4 one might work, with wider feet. But the thing on bf2142 is a bit huge.

Humans would also have to develop stronger material to cope with the stress of 'running', or some jump jets so it can fly ^-^

finally, a mech looses a leg...its over. A tank loose its tread or a wheel, easy replacements.

I doubt they will generate propulsion to make the mech do so either.

The future will not be bigger and yes they may make knees etc wow we could probably make them now. Doesn't mean they will be reliable and a cost effective solution in the long term.

Three legs would be difficult to coordinate and legs full stop are stupid. A hover craft can go up gradients if it has enough propulsion aswell. It would be harder to make legs grip.

Materials is an interesting point Inhert especially when you consider we are running out of all major resources on this planet.

And I don't think you should discount my idea of profile. It would be visible for miles making it an easy target and a stupid idea.

Most animals walk of four paws for very good reasons:
  • Much more stable
  • Better able to jump
  • Lower profile so better camo
  • Faster
  • Better grip

I don't think mechs will ever be made I think tanks will be advanced upon.

I disagree. Anyway, mechs are just tanks with legs really.

Yes but I doubt tanks will be developed in this way. Tactically the current tanks are more useful IMO.

Recon - June 14, 2006 06:42 PM (GMT)
Have you watched the MGS4 video? If we could make those they would be 100 times more useful than tanks.

And some one like 10 miles away could take them down with long range missiles. LOL very useful.

I predict that the new weapons will be remote control tanks that are very sleek and have jamming devices to block missile tracking and perhaps even active camoflage that changes its colour to blend as well as possible into its surroundings.

Maybe they have 'jamming devices to block missile tracking' too?

Probably its simple enough to do.

However they are such a big target that tracking wud not be needed. Optical guided missiles like TOWs could take them out miles away. A stealth tank (realy plans exsist) could sneak up close especially with their silent engines and muffled tracks.

Edit: Just found this video. Any bigger and it can't walk because joints cannot be made to be strong enough.

Its top speed is 2mph and it needs 2 guys either side of it incase it falls over cos it costs millions.

I think ill stick with my trusty Tank.

dazcarroll - June 15, 2006 11:18 PM (GMT)
wow

what interesting points

LMAO

legs are gd but wheels are faster

Gunball - June 16, 2006 03:17 AM (GMT)
theyve made robots that can run
meaning that both feet are off the ground while propelling it self forward
also think of what theyll be like i n50 years never mind 100
